For the first instillation of the Photo Theory Meetup, we’ll be reading through an essay taken from Susan Sontag’s book On Photography. Published in 1973, On Photography provides commentary on the use of photography as part of contemporary culture, and its role in the media. Though written 46 years prior, the analysis the book offers couldn’t ring more true today. America, Seen Through Photographs, Darkly, presents a look at the ways in which American photography changed with the coming of Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, and the rise of the American documentary tradition.
